A Remarkable Person

Last year, my October Singapore trip coincided with the recent demise of Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew. From the numerous newspaper articles written about her, a picture emerged of a remarkable person. She was a caring, intelligent, kind-hearted woman who was the center of her family's life.

For her eulogy, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said: “I have precious memories of our 63 years together. Without her, I would be a different man, with a completely different life. She devoted herself to me and our children. She was always there when I needed her.

After her second stroke in 2008, her mind remained clear but her voice became weaker. When I kissed her on her cheek, she told me not to come too close to her in case I caught her pneumonia. I assured her that the doctors did not think that was likely because I was active. When given some peaches in hospital, she asked the maid to take one home for my lunch. I was at the center of her life.

The last two years of her life were the most difficult. She was bedridden, could not speak but she was still cognisant. Every night she would wait for me to sit by her to tell her of my day’s activities and to read her favourite poems. Then she would sleep.

She has lived a life full of warmth and meaning. I should find solace at her 89 years of her life well-lived. But at this moment of the final parting, my heart is heavy with sorrow and grief.”

What Mr. Lee, a traditional Chinese gentleman in his restraint and composure had declined to reveal, his children and grandchildren chose to say for him, describing how he learnt to care for his wife after she became frail.

Lee Hsien Yang said, looking teary-eyed: “Papa helped, cajoled and encouraged her in her rehabilitation. He continued to care for her with an infinite amount of patience, love, kindness and good humour. He adjusted his routine to accommodate her changing circumstances and physical condition. His abiding love, devotion and care must have been a great comfort to her, and an insipiration to Fern and me on how marriage is a life-long partnership, through good health and illness. When we married in 1991, Papa wrote Fern and me a letter with advice on marriage. On his relationship with Mama, he said:

We have never allowed the other to feel abandoned and alone in any moment of crises. Quite the contrary, we have faced all major crisis in our lives together, sharing our fears and hopes, and our subsequent grief or exultation. These moments of crises have bonded us closer together. With the years, the number of special ties which we two share have increased. Some of them we share with the children.”

Mr. Lee Hsien Loong spoke not as Prime Minister but as the grieving elder son, clad in mourning garb of plain white T-shirt and black trousers, addressing the Minister Mentor as Papa for the first time in public.

Mama has always been part of our lives. Papa was busy with political work, so she did most of the bringing up of the children – me, Ling and Yang.

We stayed in close touch during my years abroad in Britain and later in the US. Once a week I would sit down to write a long letter home, and Mama and Papa would each write me a long letter too. In those days, Cambridge was very far away from home. E-mail and Skype did not yet exist. International phone calls were expensive. The weekly letter was eagerly awaited for news of home, and for news of the son fending for himself in a faraway hand. I would read and re-read the letters from home, then file them away carefully.

In the end, there was just a man who loved his wife till the end. He walked to her casket and placed a single stalk of red rose, green leaves still on its stem, on her body.

Then he bent towards her and reached for her face with his right hand. He brought his hand back to his lips and planted a kiss on her forehead.

As though he could not bear to part, he did that again. And then he walked away, composed and unaided.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew gave his wife two final kisses as she lay peaceful in her casket at the Mandai Crematorium. Madam Kwa Geok Choo - his beloved Choo - had died on Saturday 2 Oct 2010, aged 89, after being bedridden for over two years as a result of a series of strokes.

His kiss was a private gesture of love, but will linger in the memories of those who witnessed it, as a public affirmation of the abiding love they shared.

GLEE – KURT

In the second episode of Glee, we find out that gay looking guy, Kurt, secretly has a crush on Football Star.

Kurt’s father is not happy to find his son wearing tights and dancing when he came home early one day. He looks doubtful as Kurt blatantly lied and said that all the football guys are wearing tights too, as it helps with athletic performance.

In an attempt to make his father proud of him, Kurt joins the football team where they’re just not into music, dancing and gay guys. After showing them that he has the required skills to be a kicker, the guys relented and incorporated dancing into their practice sessions.

Towards the end of a football match where their team was losing, Football Star decides to activate Plan Kurt where everyone will dance. Afraid of looking like idiots yet knowing they have nothing else to lose, the rest of the team grudgingly agreed.

Cue music...

The whole team starts dancing, the crowd follow suit and the opposing team doesn’t know what to make of it. Kurt kicks the ball over the post, scores a touchdown, and the crowd erupted with a resounding cheer as the team won their first game.

After the game, back home, Kurt decides to come clean and tell his father that he’s not straight. Surprisingly, his father replied he knows and loves him all the same. They hugged – tightly. Before his father left the room, he turned around and asked, “Are you sure?” Kurt replied yes and continues with his facial.

In another episode, featuring one of my favourite songs from Glee, “Defying Gravity”, Kurt decides to challenge Rachel for the lead female singing part. Both will sing this song and the rest of the Glee team will vote for the best singer. Will warns Kurt that this song has a high F, a note that Kurt has struggled with. Kurt decides to intensify his practice session.

His hard work paid off and he happily told his father he has managed to hit the high F. He then noticed that his dad was upset about something. He finds out that his father has been receiving crank calls. He knows it is because of his preference for guys, singing and unique dressing style.

The day for the challenge arrives. Kurt steps to the front, the lights are dimmed except for the spotlight on him. Kurt starts singing

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm thru with playing by the rules of someone else's games
Too late for second guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and plead

It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I'm defying gravity

He looks around and then decides to flub the high F as he sings
You won't bring me down

Everyone looked disappointed that he didn’t managed to sing it well. Rachel sang hers effortlessly and was declared the winner.

Back home, Kurt broke the news to his father that he didn’t get the part. His father was puzzled, “But I thought you managed to nail the high F, or whatever it was”. Kurt confessed he intentionally sang off-key after seeing how upset his father was over the crank calls. He knew the situation would only get worse if he took the lead female singer part. He told his dad, “I do want to be a star, and I will be one some day. But as much as I love being a star, I love you more”. They both hugged.

GLEE

Having read rave reviews in the papers about Glee, I finally decided to watch the first episode of Glee.

After watching the first episode of Glee, I’m an instant fan. They were right. It’s a great show ! Great songs, great singing, great dance routines, and by the end of the first episode, my only regret was I shouldn’t have waited so long to catch this show.

Here’s a quick summary of my favourite episode so far – the Pilot episode.

Will Scheuster teaches Spanish at McKinley William High School. He loves his job and he couldn’t be happier when the Glee Club teacher advisor role becomes available. He decides to take it. Glee by definition is “opening yourself up to joy”, we find out.

He tells bored-looking principal he wants to take over the Glee Club. “You want to take over as Captain of Titanic too?” he asked Will. It is clear he’s not passionate about his job, quite the opposite of Will. He tells Will he has to pay $60 a month to keep the Glee Club going.

Will decides to take up the challenge of motivating his kids to excel, even if it means forking out money to do something which he is supposed to be paid for. He declares

There’s no joy in these kids. They feel invisible. That’s why every single one of them has a MySpace page.

He has an inspiration for the new name for his Glee Club team – New Direction. Audition begins for New Direction. Five kids decide to sign up:

Gay looking Guy (Kurt)
Plump African-American Girl (Mercedes)
Asian looking Girl (Tina)
Wheelchair-bound Guy (Artie)
The Star (Rachel)

In what he describes as the blackest day in his life, Will tricks the popular Football Star to sign up as the male lead after hearing him sing in the shower after football practice

Can’t fight this feeling anymore
Don’t know what I started fighting for

Glee Club desperately need a male lead singer and he hopes by signing up the Football Star, other kids will sign up too.

The Glee Club decides to take a field trip and check out their competition. At the performance, we find out that last year’s regional champion is Vocal Adrenaline. They appear on stage, girls in blue and the guys in white shirt. They start on a sedate note, with heads bow down

Ohio, ohio, ohio

And then burst into frentic energy of

They tried to make me go to rehab
And I won’t go, go, go

It was non-stop, top-notch dancing and singing till the end of the song. This Amy Winehouse song has never sounded so good. The audience burst into wild applause.

Camera zooms in our Glee Club members. They look stunned. “We’re doomed”, Asian looking girl said. Will’s jaw has dropped and remains in that position.

Back at the home front, Will finds out that his wife is expecting their first child. He now has a family to support and has to do the right thing. He decides to give up his dream – the Glee Club and his teaching job. He needs a better paying job with better benefits. He breaks the news to his Glee Club.

As Will walks down the hallway on his last day at school, he hears music from the auditorium. He decides to take a last look at his dream. He sees

On stage: everyone is dressed in red t-shirt and dark blue jeans. They are rehearsing a new routine, without Will.

Football star starts to sing

Just a small town girl
Living in a lonely world
She took the midnight train
Going anywhere

Rachel then sings

Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train
Going anywhere

All five singers are now singing together, and for the first time, looking happy doing what they enjoy doing - singing.

Don’t stop believing
Hold on to that feeling

Will knew what he had to was the right thing. He steps in to tell his kids.

The Wedding Invitation

Saturday 22 May 2010 will be another milestone in the Lee family history. Abi will no longer be the most eligible bachelor in KK whenever he returns home for a visit. After 22 May 2010, he will be the former most eligible bachelor.

This is the reason why

I think I hear the sound of hearts breaking and uncontrollable sobbing from the distant shores of KK …

For those of you who are more composed and do not need tissue paper to wipe away tears of happiness, do look for more details at
http://www.weddingwire.com/anicacharles

The wedding party, which will be a casual affair, will be held at the Peck’s summer house on Lake Austin near Mt. Bonnell.

How about the engagement ring, you may ask ?
Wonder no more, here is a stunning picture of the ring.

It is a band type ring, featuring 5 round brilliant-cut diamonds, on 14k white gold. Total carat weight is 0.54ct.

Congratulations to the soon to be Mr & Mrs Lee !

The question uppermost in my mind now is not about the summer house, the ring or the party. It is :

How will I survive the 30 hours flight to get to Austin ??

Fakebook Page

Recently, I was in Singapore for two weeks for work. By the 12th day, I was wishing that I did not have to eat the same complimentary breakfast for the 12th time. However, a humourous article in the newspaper that I was reading helped me to forget that I was having the same breakfast for the 12th time in a row.

From The Sunday Times, March 7 2010, Tay Yek Keak imagines what the Facebook pages of newsmakers might look like. This is part of his write-up.
